Watford Palace Theatre’s Autumn Highlights

Client Overview

Watford Palace Theatre, a beloved 600-seat venue, has been at the heart of the local community for 113 years, providing entertainment and inspiration both on stage and in the streets of Watford. The theatre is renowned for championing new works and offering a diverse range of performances. The Graphic Design House (TGDH) has been collaborating with Watford Palace Theatre for several years, producing their highlights brochures, title treatments, and a variety of supporting assets such as flyers, posters, window vinyls, and show programmes.

The Opportunity

For the Autumn 2024 season, Watford Palace Theatre tasked us with updating their existing highlights brochure to reflect the upcoming season’s offerings. This edition needed to expand from a 12-page to a 16-page DL fold-out format, providing more space to highlight the theatre’s exciting lineup, including their highly anticipated pantomime, Aladdin. The theatre’s new signage, featuring pink neon elements, also needed to be incorporated into the design to ensure consistency across their branding.

Our Approach

To meet the client’s needs, we used the existing brochure design as a foundation, updating it with the new season’s content and expanding it to the required 16 pages. Our approach included the following key elements:

  • Template Update: We utilized the established design as a base, ensuring consistency with previous editions while making necessary adjustments to accommodate the expanded content. The feature on the upcoming pantomime, Aladdin, was prominently placed, with the title treatment that TGDH had previously created.
  • Enhanced Visual Impact: Based on client feedback, we updated the design to include full-page imagery and vibrant colour elements, creating a greater visual impact as the brochure is unfolded. The addition of pink neon sign elements throughout the design was a direct reflection of the new signage at the theatre, creating a cohesive visual identity across all touchpoints.
  • Neon Signage Integration: To align the brochure with the theatre’s updated aesthetic, we incorporated a neon sign on the front cover, along with pink glowing titles and lines to separate the shows within the brochure. This creative choice not only tied the brochure to the theatre’s physical updates but also added a contemporary flair that resonated with the theatre’s brand evolution.

The Results

In the competitive world of performing arts, standing out requires more than just great shows—it demands great marketing. The enhanced design of the Autumn 2024 highlights brochure played a critical role in elevating the theatre’s brand, ensuring that the brochure was not just informative, but also a powerful tool for generating excitement and anticipation among both regular patrons and new audiences.

This project was more than a routine update; it was an opportunity to visually align the theatre’s promotional materials with its evolving brand identity. By expanding the brochure and integrating new design elements that mirrored the theatre’s physical updates, we ensured that the marketing materials not only informed but also excited the audience, driving engagement and attendance for the upcoming season. This project underscores the importance of cohesive branding across all platforms, especially when introducing new visual elements to the public.

The final product was a 16-page DL fold-out highlights brochure, printed on 150gsm Silk stock, showcasing the Autumn 2024 season at Watford Palace Theatre. In addition to the physical brochure, an online Issuu version was created, allowing the theatre to reach a broader audience through their website. The updated design successfully captured the vibrancy of the new season, while also reflecting the theatre’s enhanced visual identity.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can strengthen a theatre’s connection with its community and enhance its overall brand presence.
