Jersey Opera House

The client

Jersey Opera House is a historic Victorian theatre in St. Helier, Jersey, and a key cultural venue for the Channel Islands. Operated by a charity, it hosts a wide programme of live performances including musicals, drama and concerts, while also supporting local talent and delivering educational initiatives.

Following an extended closure at the end of the pandemic in March 2020, the theatre underwent a £12.7m government-funded refurbishment to mark its 125th anniversary, reopening with modernised facilities while retaining its historic character.

The brief

The Graphic Design House had collaborated with Jersey Opera House for several years prior to its closure, producing multiple seasonal brochures each year. In 2025, we were invited to continue this long-standing relationship, supporting the theatre’s reopening by developing a new event brochure.

Alongside this, we were asked to design a souvenir programme for the opening production, Encore! Welcome Home, ensuring both pieces aligned with the theatre’s renewed identity while building on established design foundations.

Our approach

We structured the project into four clear stages, from concept development through to asset delivery. This allowed us to build on existing design foundations, evolve the visual language thoughtfully, and ensure all final materials were consistent, flexible and ready for both digital and print use.

The new designs were developed as a continuation of the earlier seasonal brochures, retaining their recognisable structure while moving the aesthetic forward with a cleaner, more refined feel.

Digital-first, print-ready

Although the event brochure was initially planned as a digital-only publication, potential print requirements were considered from the outset. This allowed for design adjustments that would support a short-run printed version if required.

Editorial structure & restraint

A clear editorial layout was retained throughout, supported by a deliberately limited colour palette of three core colours. This ensured consistency across materials while introducing a more luxurious, considered tone.

Alongside the event brochure, we designed a souvenir programme for Encore! Welcome Home. The programme followed the same clean, simple layout approach, with additional visual elements introduced to complement and reinforce the title treatment.

Results & next steps

The final brochures and programme provided Jersey Opera House with a cohesive set of materials to support its reopening, reflecting both continuity and renewal. By building on existing design foundations and introducing a more refined aesthetic, the work helped mark an important milestone in the theatre’s history while remaining flexible for future use across both digital and print formats.
