Client Overview

The Hatfield House Music Festival, now in its 13th year, is an esteemed event held at the historic Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This year’s theme, “Musical Time Travel,” takes audiences on a journey through centuries of music, from the compositions of Dowland, once the composer in residence at Hatfield, to contemporary works. The House since 2017 and the creation of the brochure was undertaken in June 2024.

The Opportunity

For the 2024 Hatfield House Music Festival, the task was to design an 8-page closed gate-fold brochure that would serve both as a practical guide and a keepsake for attendees. This year’s theme, “Musical Time Travel,” required a design that not only captured the festival’s historical essence but also highlighted the grandeur and significance of the Marble Hall, the festival’s venue. The brochure needed to seamlessly blend historical elegance with modern design elements while adhering to the established design framework provided by the client.

Our Approach

Understanding the unique blend of history and contemporary artistry that defines the Hatfield House Music Festival, we set out to create a brochure that would embody the festival’s spirit and the timeless quality of its setting.

  • Template Adaptation and Visual Design: We started by adapting an existing design template, incorporating client-supplied text and images. Our design aimed to reflect the architectural beauty and historical significance of Hatfield House, while also embracing a modern aesthetic that resonates with today’s audiences. The visual theme was carefully crafted to balance these elements, creating a cohesive and engaging design.
  • Cover and Imagery: The cover of the brochure features a stunning photograph by Chris Christodoulou, capturing the grandeur of the Marble Hall. This image was chosen to set the tone for the festival, immediately immersing readers in the rich history and elegance of the venue. The photograph serves as a visual anchor, connecting the festival’s theme of musical evolution with the historic setting in which it takes place.
  • Content Structure: Inside the brochure, we structured the content to provide clear and accessible information about the festival’s schedule, ticket booking, and visitor details. The design ensures that attendees can easily navigate the brochure and find the information they need. In addition to logistical details, the brochure includes acknowledgments of key figures and supporters, emphasizing the collaborative effort that brings the festival to life each year.
