Portsmouth Football Club (PFC), commonly referred to as Pompey, is a historic football club based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Founded in 1898, Portsmouth Football Club has a rich heritage and a passionate fanbase.

As they prepared for their 2023/24 League One season, the club stood on the brink of celebrating a monumental milestone, their 125th anniversary. This iconic moment in the club’s history presented a unique opportunity to honour its rich legacy through a series of commemorative matchday programmes.

This anniversary provided a rare moment to deepen the connection with supporters by blending nostalgia with modern design, celebrating the club’s history while engaging a new generation of fans. The task was clear: create matchday programmes that not only paid tribute to the club’s storied past but also captivated the current fanbase, transforming each issue into a cherished keepsake for the 125th anniversary season.

Digging into the Archives

We began with in-depth research into Portsmouth FC’s visual history, exploring past programme designs from key moments such as the post-war championship years. This helped us identify the design cues, typography, and imagery that defined the club’s visual identity across decades.

Crafting a Collectible Series

Across the 2023/24 season, 24 unique matchday programmes were produced, each celebrating a different chapter in the club’s history. From the design of the covers to the feature layouts inside, every detail was considered to capture the spirit of the era it represented.

Each programme reimagined classic elements from historic issues — retro typefaces, bold layouts, and iconic photography — balanced with contemporary touches to suit today’s audience. The result was a collection that felt timeless yet modern, appealing to both long-standing fans and younger supporters.
