A modern brochure redesign

The brief

The Lights is a vibrant cultural hub in Hampshire, offering music, theatre, comedy, dance, and community events. With a 249-seat auditorium, Arena Hall, business rooms, dance studios, and the Atrium Café Bar, it provides a versatile space for a wide range of activities. Since early 2023, The Graphic Design House (TGDH) has partnered with The Lights to elevate their branding and communication materials.

The seasonal brochure is a key tool for engaging audiences and promoting the theatre’s diverse events. The Lights wanted a modern design that would attract younger audiences while maintaining appeal for long-term patrons. The challenge was to develop a cohesive design across seasons, improve readability, and move away from heavy colour backgrounds that made text difficult to read, all while aligning with the theatre’s brand identity.

Our approach

From moving in line with The Lights’ brand identity to redesigning every page of their seasonal brochure, we focused on creating a brochure that informs, excites, and draws audiences in. Hover over the flip tiles below to explore each step of our design process.

Matching the brand identity

We drew inspiration from The Lights’ logo, using the triangular light motif to inform shapes, angles, and visual themes throughout the brochure. This created a consistent connection between the publication and the theatre’s brand.

The brochure layout was designed to be functional and visually engaging. Image frames and design elements mirrored the logo’s angles, integrating month tabs, date boxes, and quote boxes. The cover used a burst effect of shapes for show imagery, with some images extending beyond the frames to create a sense of dynamism. These were not just aesthetic choices; they were strategic decisions aimed at enhancing the user experience to new and existing audiences.

A rounded sans-serif font was chosen for headings, complementing the logo’s round forms. A vibrant gradient-based colour palette was developed to categorise different show genres and differentiate seasonal brochures while maintaining a unified brand feel.

Colour gradients and design elements were updated each season to maintain a visual connection while ensuring each brochure edition felt distinct. This approach allowed audiences to immediately recognise the brand while enjoying fresh, seasonal variations.

Results & next steps

The redesigned brochures were well-received by both long-term patrons and younger audiences. The cohesive yet dynamic design improved readability, enhanced audience engagement, and reinforced the theatre’s visual identity. Each season’s brochure now presents a modern, professional, and inviting experience for readers.

We continue to produce each season’s brochure for The Lights, including digital ISSU versions for the website. The partnership will focus on refining and evolving the design, keeping the brochures engaging, visually appealing, and aligned with the theatre’s brand to support audience growth and engagement.
