Lady Margaret Hall

The client

Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) is a college of the University of Oxford, founded in 1879. In 2024, LMH began working with The Graphic Design House (TGDH) to support the evolution of its alumni communications following the introduction of new college branding.

The brief

The brief was to redesign the LMH alumni suite using the new brand identity. This included three key publications: LMH News, The Brown Book and the Philanthropy Report.

Our task was to create a cohesive design system across the suite that introduced visual consistency and familiarity between publications, while allowing each to retain its own purpose and character. As part of the process, we presented a series of visual moodboards and concepts tailored to each publication.

Our approach

We structured the project into four clear stages, from concept development through to asset delivery.

Applying the new brand

The project focused on implementing the new LMH brand consistently across all three publications, ensuring they felt aligned while elevating the overall quality and presence of the suite.

Structural consistency

Key design decisions were made to ensure consistency year-on-year. Section colourways were fixed annually, and spine text placement was aligned so that multiple editions would sit neatly together, with text heights matching across the collection.

Balancing familiarity & change

The 'Brown Book' needed to remain familiar to returning alumni readers. Its design was carefully evolved to align with the rebrand while maintaining recognisable elements from previous editions.

All three publications were designed to feel considered and engaging, pieces intended to be picked up, read and retained, while still serving their individual communication needs.

“We’re so delighted with how the new design is working on the whole, and the article spreads in particular look so so so much better than they ever have done before. So a huge thank you for all of your efforts!

Results & next steps

The final alumni suite delivers a consistent yet varied set of publications, using layout, typography and colour palette to clearly link the three pieces without repetition. Each publication feels distinct while remaining part of a unified system.

Following delivery of the print-ready files, TGDH also produced digital versions of each publication, tailored for accessibility through the use of bookmarks, interactive links and image descriptions. we continue to work with Lady Margaret Hall on these annual alumni publications.
